David is one of the main characters in the book who works for a top law firm in downtown Chicago. However, due to his unforgiving 80-hour work week, his relationship with his family was beginning to suffer.  So one day, he finally cracked and impulsively left the firm. Serendipitously, he happened upon a small two-man law firm and decided to work there. The book then follows up with a series of weird cases the boutique firm had taken on and their eagerness of hitting a big case and get rich.

John Grisham is known for his delicately written legal novels, and The Litigators is no exception. Throughout the book, the author managed to exhibited somewhat accurate reflection of the legal profession – which allowed the audience (in this case everyone) to understand the harsh truth of the profession (either slaving for big firms and working 80 hours a week, or living on scraps and hustling clients on the streets). I can’t stress this fact enough, but the book is a real page-turner, and the drama in the plot kept me on the edge of my seat. By simplifying the complex world of lawyers and legal proceedings, the reader is able to appreciate the book’s themes and plot without needing prior knowledge. Continuously shown in the novel, though written casually, the author managed to show character development in a clear and original way as it is presented in a normal everyday language. Designed to keep the audience reading, the author chooses to create a sense of fluency and helps with the character development which helps the novel zips together seamlessly.

As seen in John’s previous books, The Litigators included a theme of a relentless grind for money, this was both shown in the previous firm the main character was in (where he was forced to work from early morning to night) and in the boutique firm he was in afterwards (where they were jumping on bandwagons to earn money such as mass tort cases). The author repeatedly has shown in the book that lawyers are money hungry and are blinded by money. Even though this was not obvious, but it has been hinted from the get-go get go of the book. As a lawyer, the author is sure of what the legal profession world is like and reflects it clearly in his book as a conveying message to the audience.

This must be one of the most exciting books I have read,  it gripped me as I raced through the book all night. With a slow start, the author employs a strategy to lure the reader in, like a train, slowly starting but soon we are dragged into the rabbit hole of “The Litigators”, which is why I would recommend the book to others.

Review: This assignment is a relatively easy assignment for me as I love reading the author of my book. I feel like even though I really like reading, I do not have much time reading in my life as I do not find time. So one of the challenges during this assignment was find more time so that I could read the book completely. Through this experiment I am able to build up a happy and find time to read every night which was really helpful, whether it is a book I like to read, or the Bible.
