Three Casket Essay

Though there are many different opinions on whether it is correct for Portia’s father to still choose who gets to marry Portia or not, we must admit that the system of the three caskets worked excellently in this case.

The first two caskets – Gold and Silver – represented the different desires the world wants and chases for. The gold not only represents wealth but also makes a point that people just want it for its appearance. This would have been choosing Portia for how she looks and the wealth she has, which does not represent a start to a good relationship, therefore the one that chooses the gold casket explains that what people desire isn’t usually beneficial for a husband. Then the silver casket represents the currency and greed people have for money, and choosing this results in realizing that you are an idiot because you prize money in the first place.

The last casket, the lead had an inscription where it said that “Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath” meaning that people who chose this casket must give all they have got, and this is usually what a marriage requires, both ends putting all their efforts and thinking about the other person, and in this case Bassanio was willing to risk everything on the line for the marriage, which ultimately makes the perfect husband.

All in all, the three caskets explained and revealed the person’s greed and desires to themselves, and allowed them to see themselves better, which is what helped Portia’s father determine which was the best candidate.

  1. I agree with your points; character is indeed the most important criteria for choosing a spouse! You also manage to be concise with your words, which made everything simple to understand. Perhaps what I like most about this essay is the analysis. The analysis is very complete and explains everything needed to understand the genius behind the caskets. You explained which each casket symbolizes and how the caskets managed to give Portia the perfect husband. Perhaps you can work on your grammar. In particular, there were quite a bit of run-ons. Still a great essay overall through!

  2. I enjoyed reading your analysis and opinion on the three caskets. I definitely agree that the caskets have revealed important characteristics of each person, and has actually allowed Portia to gain a person that she can love and care for. I enjoyed how you explained the different reasons that a person may end up choosing each casket, it shows an understanding of each of the three suitors. I believe your organization was quite great, but your sentence fluency and grammar can be improved. This is definitely a great essay that you wrote.
